Serendipity. Misc. stuff, maybe related to Plist.....

An introducer to one of Melville's late poems, "A Utilitarian View of the 
Monitor's Fight" sez that
this battle between the first two ironclad warships, "marked the end of the 
concept of glory in war."
Now that floating machines are pitted against each other, war is placed "among 
the trades and artisans'..
warriors "are now but operatives" Melville observes.

Don't want to start a whole contemporary politcal discussion thread here---but, 
hey, this is the plist,
so, feel free to talk amongst yourselves......but In J. Alter's book on Obama's 
first year in office,"The Promise",
there are many quoted about the President's cool....then others speak about how 
conscientous he is with
workers, Secret Service, etc. and some are quoted about how much they think he 
cares......

Now, Keep Cool but Care is worth more discussion when we get to it, as Alice was 
the first to say this go-round, but
a pynchon reader could not help thinking of the phrase as he read "The 
Promise".
