Sandweiss, Martha A. (2009). Passing Strange: A Gilded Age Tale of
Love and Deception Across the Color Line.
Anyway that book starred Clarence King, notable for passing as
African-American despite his fair complexion and blue eyes,
but from the Wikipedia article there's also a mention of how he was
strongly influenced by the pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and Ruskin
he worked as a geologist but apparently had a rich inner life (like a geode...)
