See the wiki on Benny....
(misc. Molly Hite quoted there in her good book on TRP said this in re
to the charge that P's Crew characters were flat: I knew them when I was their age.)
Re: Profane. the wiki posts Durkheim as originator of the classic cultural division between
the Sacred and the Profane......we know P read some of the classic age sociologists---Weber
name-checked in GR....
But we know, don't we?, that Pynchon seemed to suck down Eliade sometime in his vision-making years
who is famous for elaborating and establishing the concept within societal religious studies:
wikipedia
"Eliade was a leading interpreter of religious experience, who established paradigms in religious studies that persist to this day. His theory that hierophanies form the basis of religion, splitting the human experience of reality into sacred and profane space and time, has proved influential.[1]
And space and time itself P uses in V.......
Sacred: the culture's connection to the heavens, their notion of the Divine, the tower. The Profane, the secular,--- the street! We know where Benny lives.
Lots of stuff in the Eliade article that might help get more of V.....coming up."in time" as AtD is always saying. .........
