In early Pynchon, the great fear is the inevitable slide that entropy  
suggests. Young Pynch saw that in a very "Metropolis", dystopian,  
kinda PKD way in the stories and "V."

He got over it.

In "V." he really gets into it, the intersection of the fleshy and the  
mechanical.
