I remember being gay. It's been a while, though. I remember sitting
with my girl under a very starry sky, our legs twined together in the
warm darkness until we both were moved so greatly we started singing
together for the pure joy of the moment. Our voices both were awful,
but our hearts were gay. And another time, when the whole commune got
together for a party and some of the guys set up their equipment for
an impromptu gig and there was dancing, food and merriment all day and
deep into the night. It was a truly gay time. Then, one day in 1968,
Bobby Kennedy came to town on a train tour of the Central Valley on
his way to L.A. The whole town seemed to have come out to see him and
everyone cheered and wept for gaiety at the great man's presence among
us and his hopeful words of peace, reconciliation and prosperity for
all. Of course, that turned pretty sad when he got killed two days
later.
Seems like no one's gay anymore.
