In a walled-off basement room ablaze with 1,369 light bulbs lives the
unnamed hero of Ralph Ellison's INVISIBLE MAN (1952).
1,369 is the square of thirty-seven—Ellison’s age at the time of
writing—which ties the narrator’s experience to Ellison’s own sense of
self.
