In the evolution of most phrases and words in English, they start out compound
then, with use, separate......high-school is a classic example. Now high school.
TRP uses the phrases snow-shroud and snow-hiss on page 13. and weather-deck [your page may vary]
Why?.....this was not common usage in 55 or 61-63.
We know how important "The Education of Henry Adams" was to TRPs developing vision.
He uses the phrase snow-cover....and spelling-book, and salt-marshes and pine-woods and
snapping-turtles and scores more just in the first chapter. One might pretentiously argue that many
things were less divergent, split apart then??
Whatever, TRP, who hasn't changed the dash punctuation.............was RIGHT THERE around 1900
as semi-omniscient narrator....?
