I think one of the problems besides the obvious is that many well-known
Civil war commanders, Sherman, Sheridan, e.g.who were highly-praised during
the war became outright Indian killers in the 1870s and 1880s. Knowing
Americans love for black and white determinations is it any wonder American
history as it was written is hard put dealing with such ambiguity
