Yeah, I think of it more like wishful thinking:  believing in some
form of inherent justice.  Vengeance is only one aspect of justice.
Reward is another.

I don't think Pynchon is literal about karma, nor about ghosts, nor
any other fantastic phenomena in any of his novels, so I don't think
they show him losing his fire.  But the writing in general?...
