"Sexual intercourse began in nineteen sixty-three/
Which was just a little too late for me"-----Philip Larkin

In McEwan's "On Chesil Beach" it is 1962 as it begins.
Two newly-married virgins are on their wedding night.
They are scared and nervous together in their hotel room
in Britain near the ocean.

MCEwan's narrator writes that if it were a few years later
they might handle their fear and nervousness by runnning
down to the beach and doing it...................

but now they never even consider it.
