Could be. Worth remembering, still, that the conceptual traffic goes both
ways: statistics were STATE-istics (demography, mortality, taxes, &c) long
before they were applied to thermodynamics. And I've seen it plausibly
argued that commerce & double-entry bookkeeping were prerequisites to
conservation laws.
