this is probably wherein the humor lay;
reminds me of a reference to a time when there were only
two automobiles in the US state of Ohio
- and they had a collision!
(something I think many of us heard in primary or remedial
driving classes, and / or automobile insurance commercials...)

the irony of seeking to be far from the madding crowd,
only to literally "run into" another pursuing same solace in solitude...

however, the premise is amusing but I think the abiding
tradition, from at least Cincinnatus, of an orderly retreat
from publicity and public battles, is a good one and I can't
entertain the notion of Mr Pynchon's choice harming Mr Salinger -
if anything, his following the example and refusing lionization was probably
a sustaining factor and bolstered Mr Salinger's confidence in his choice...
