Here is a tidbit relevant to Adams' other book, Mont-Saint Michel and Chartes (but
not from it):
Chartes was also a proto-university in its earliest time and a Bishop Fulbert was its
Renaissance Man head. He not only wrote meditations on the Blessed Virgin that
passed into the French Church but he was an up-to-date scientist, "the first man in western Europe
to employ a new instrument developed by the Arabs, the astrolabe, in his investigations of the position
and attitude of the stars conducted from his watchtower at Chartres."
--from Chartres, by Henderson, Penguin 1968
"the tower was everywhere"---Lot 49......."all along the watchtower"----Bobbie D.
