NP - Could you pass latest citizenship test?

The date of the Constitution is important because it relates to the
"Who was the real first President" question. (Hint: it definitely
wasn't George Washington). The gap between the Revolution and the
Constitution is the era of the failed Articles of Confederation when
American States could squabble freely with each other while American
merchant ships were fair game for anyone who wanted to seize them due
to the lack of an American Navy. This leads to the first international
treaty signed by an American President (George Washington) and
ratified by the first Congress (truly the Founding Fathers) which
contains the words "The United States of America is in no way founded
upon the Christian religion and seeks no conflict with any Mohammedan
nation over differences of religious opinion." Phew! There it is. They
put it in writing.
We the people were not just providing for a more perfect union, but
the mutual defense, specifically defense against piracy. In addition,
they deliberately DID NOT establish a state religion. As a result, the
small, weak, vulnerable USA was able to enter into agreements that no
European power could. This gave American merchant shipping a near
monopoly in the south Mediterranean. Combined with the American
whaling industry (name check Melville), this economic clout financed
the military growth necessary to protect said economic clout and the
snowball gathers size and speed as it rolls downhill.
In conclusion: if the United States of America had been "founded on
Christian principles" it would still be small, weak, vulnerable, and
poor.
Thank you, ladies and gentlemen! I'll be grinding this ax here all
week! Remember to tip your bartenders and waiters!
