maybe Pynchon as a New Deal believer hated the "Not Yours to Give" speech?
so all right, I haven't yet found the key that opens up the song
parody or the soliloquy or the apparent decision of Roonie and Mafia
to procreate to my satisfaction -
I'm disinclined to just say Pynchon was having a bad day.
We know Mafia likes that rough shit. So I'm not objecting on those
grounds exactly; neither of these principals is being held up as a
paragon anyway.
Maybe, this is the kind of pitch and momentum you had to psyche
yourself up to, to get hot enough to think about makin' babies in them
times, what with colonialism and that Indian-guilt-boilerplate
mentioned in AtD and present-day irresponsible and hideously expensive
and corruptive military adventurism...
Thoughts? Anybody? Bueller?
