the conflict or feud, as De Rougemont describes it, of two moral
systems is at work here; there is the moral code of Catholicism or of
the Christians and there is the Heretical Courtesy, the former takes
marriage for granted--even makes it a sacrament, the latter advances
the idea that marriage is an error.

So, if you cheat, as a Christian, you sin; it is a crime to commit
adultery, it is against nature, against the natural / social order of
things.

If you cheat you are a sinner, perhaps pitied or condemned.

But what about heretical passion? Well...to make a long story short,
we in the West have only a profaned (Eliade is another text of
interest here--Sacred & Profane) Feud,

The Catholic and the Heretical are profaned and distorted; the myths
are no longer useful, to let off tension or sustain the agon. So, we
get the sick crew marriage.
