The members of the family of the moon eyes (Hiodontidae) herring are similar, 
frequent, up to 50 cm long fish in North Americanlakes and rivers east of the 
great Rocky Mountains live. The dorsal fin has nine to twelve rays, the anal 
fin is long, with 23-33 rays, the tail fin is split, the pelvic fin has seven 
rays.
Fossil, the Hiodontidae with Plesiolycoptera and Yanbiana from 
the Cretaceous and from China. Eohiodon lived in the Eocene in western North 
America.
The family consists of one genus and 2 species.
