the point is the tests they all face are shown as being hard to pass, perhaps?

in his favor: he's nice to old Godolphin, he rebels a little at the
idea of working for Weissmann, he's a bit revolted by Foppl

but the whole party scene kinda reminds me of a long fraternity pledge
initiation, and you'd probably have to say he finally does get
inducted...
