More from Oliver Sachs on Fresh Air today............

You know how another sub-theme in Pynchon is
face-to-faceness, so to speak....that the face qua face
is part of the ideal human encounter ?

Well, Oliver talks of how faceblindness largely
happens when a whole network in the brain---not
just one area, like Broca's---is not developed
enough from infancy on----by implication that
facial recognition is a community via family
achievement......

And he also talks about his 60s marijuana and
amphetamine use......which hurt his ability to
think abstractly, he says, but increased his
sensory awareness all 'round and, for a couple
intense weeks he had almost a photographic
memory.............
