But I just remembered that my first copy was retrieved, stripped of its cover, 
from the trashcan of Campus Texbook Exchange in 1979, a place Oedipa may have 
seen from Sproul Plaza in 1964, but defunct since the mid-eighties.

It's like original sin, the first bite of the apple turns out to be the most 
illegal.
