Becoming near suicidally depressed after reading Chris Hedges' "Empire of Illusion" (thanks, Alice) I needed something, well, more distractedly entertaining. So I went to my local independent bookseller and found in the used section a Modern Library copy of Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". I hadn't read it since it appeared in Rolling Stone in 1971 and was curious about how it held up. I'm about 30 pages in and I haven't laughed so hard since my first read of Vineland. I had a compilation CD on of the original tunes This Mortal Coil ripped and what should pop up but Talking Heads' "Drugs". Everything connects. I need to go back to using...

-Old elephants limp off to the hills to die; old Americans go off to the highway and drive themselves to death with huge cars. (Thompson)

-But our trip was different. (Thompson)

-Feels like murder but that's alright..(Byrne)
