This is from an Economist Mag rave for "The End of History" guy---boy was he
wrong there, eh?---Fukiyama's new book:

"This eventually brought about the “coming of the Leviathan” or the coercive
state. It was a development driven partly by the increasing complexity of
societies founded on agriculture but much more by the organisational challenges
of conducting warfare on an ever-greater scale."

Mr. Anti-State Pynchon might have seen it this way, eh?

A--and: In hunting around for some Golden Bough stuff, I learned that another
famous anthropoogist, Malinowski, wrote a book called Coral Gardens and
Something, Something and I might wonder if TRP got some notions of coral as a
metaphor when he was devouring his history and anthropology?..
