The term 'homunculus' is used three times in The Recognitions, all in
reference to the satiric God Momus criticizing Vulcan for creating a
man without a window installed in his breast so that others could see
into his innermost thoughts and feelings (soul). This same Momus often
wore a mask and is pictured in classical art removing a mask from his
face (See Wiki). The first sentence of the novel following the
epigraph refers to a mask being dropped.....at the moment it presumes
itself as reality.
