I remember having Goldwater buttons as a kid, and I remember listening
to an Everett Dirksen record too and arguing with the little Catholic
neighbor girl about Nixon vs Kennedy -

I'm probably overreacting because I want to push all that stuff
further away as possible

because at some point in my teens it came home to me that all this
states' rights stuff and extremism in the pursuit of liberty was a
load of hooey, that the people demanding sacrifices were getting rich,
that workers should have recourse (this occurred to me while cleaning
grease off-the-clock at Burger King), that war is not healthy for
children and other living things, that the Invisible Hand of the free
market is about as real as the Tooth Fairy...

and Bob's music was a reasonably big part of that realization!

so to learn he admired the Great Satan whom I renounced...well,
shucks...it's like in that movie Rat Race where they go to the "Barbie
Museum"...

but at this point another truth comes home, I'd rather be pursuing the
recognitions with this vigor
