The Read: Taking another chance

Did P get focussed on chance as cosmic concept (at least partly) due to this 
book?
It ain't in Henry Adams, whom he may have read before writing Entropy at least. 

Did he play with the concept first in that scene from L49 where what's-his-name 
speaks of almost 'coming out even' in life?....

Then let it enter and become a deeper theme overtly in Against the Day? 

And before that deal with scientific 'necessity' vs. the unpredictable in the 
bomb-falling plot of Gravity's Rainbow? So to speak. (gotta say this so often
so y'all don't think I'm literally loony just practically looney.)
