We plisters have talked a lot about Pynchon's use--beliefs--in the 
non-rational as he also clearly disses the rational (sometimes), when too 
narrowly conceived

Vickery sez Frazer wrote The Godlen Bough under this notion: as anthropology
was developing as a 'science' then, he wanted to put down---and theorize 
scientifically---
about all the non-rational rituals and myths he gathered from so many 
cultures....

i.e. approach the irrational very rationally, so to be succinct........
