Recognitions looking into chapter 2

I really appreciate this discussion fellows and thanks esp to mark for  
leading the first chapter.

Ch 2 TR starts off with the Eudel quote which translated reads "A funny  
thing about your
old masters. . .only the most beautiful are forged." p63 pengion

I get the feeling the narrator consciously tries to confuse us with this  
sea of confusing
people and snippets of conversation.

Nothing is what it seems. . .on p 63 the kids from Morocco "were selling  
peanuts from
the top of the basket and hashish from the bottom"

also p64 "rudeness, which they called self-respect; the contempt, which  
they called
innate dignity; the avarice which they called self-reliance"
