I second that and only add this obviousness from my reading pov: Puritanism,
Aunt May (and dad) flattened his Being-In-Life (as some existential philosopher 
twit called it)
 
But his innocent 'goodness', transmuted into becoming an artist, survived....
 
Art as the religion of a secular (in effect) world...a modernist 'tradition' 
from
Nietzsche on, at least......
