Gaddis-related, maybe....TRP-related, very obliquely

This below popped up today. Gaddis association is something I read--in one of S. Moore's notes, or online?--about how Gaddis's excoriation of 
almost everyone's,  almost-all, of their actions is founded in Thoreau's self-reliance, self-cultivation,e tc. etc.

And in reading this, I read that TRPjr (and Gaddis?) positive phrase---"the inner self"....

Coincidence? Connection? 

is this 'inner self' properly understood the human vision, a variation of it.  against which Gaddis satire satirizes?
