Misc. 'scumbled'---see GR early

In the fine piece of writing that is Simon Schama on Lucian Freud in
this week's demon-eyed Newsweek, he uses scumbled in a wonderful
line about the nude self-portrait Freud did......uses it as TRP used it, 
a piling up of time (in the portrait) 
 
Scumbled ALWAYS reminds me of its early use in GR.......
