recently read
Heinrich Boell's Billiards at Half-Past Noon
Peter Ackroyd's history of Venice
The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan--very well written and highly recommend it

to be read:

new novella (at least in book form) by Denis Johnson called Train Dreams
Ian Kershaw's history of the last year of ww2 in Germany called The End
new history of the Russians in Afghanistan called Afganisty written by
former British diplomat (his earlier book Moscow 1941 was excellent)
down the road finally english translation of new biography of Heinrich
Himmler by Peter Longerich (German reviewers favorably compare it to
Kershaw's great Hitler biography); Longerich has also recently written
a biography of Joseph Goebbels but has not been translated from German
as of yet
Wild Coast by John Gimlette (about Guyana and environs) --wonderful
travel writer, past books about Newfoundland, Paraguay were excellent
