A specific instance McLuhan cited was of a group of tribespeople somewhere who, after watching a movie for the first time and being asked about it after, all remarked upon a chicken that wandered through one sequence - and little else

He did bring in a lot of interesting details like that, and interpret them creatively.  For him, this focus meant that they were still too deeply committed to their own system of awareness to experience a narrative that lacked depth, smells, and so forth - but the chicken was interesting enough to notice.  Hearkens back to Plato and his cave a bit.
