'it shouldn't work, but it does"

Paul Motion, evidently a great drummer (who disliked soloing, so individualistic) very famous for his Village Vanguard playing back when
TRP seemed to be attending, has died. Driving yesterday, I heard the NPR stuff and interview (T Gross from 2006) about him.

In the elegiac stuff about his work, the guy described a group style he had, and said "it shouldn't work, but it did".......catching me up short
as I could not help thinking of P's aphorism about Self-Criticism in GR (right?)......

NOT STUPIDLY SUGGESTING ANY CONNECTION, as the phrase is often used just as this guy has used it to describe the unlikely yoking
of incompatibilities..............but once again a small marveling at Pynchon's use......................
