I agree. My first reading was a dutiful slog. The second and third were entirely pleasurable. That said, after the first reading I spent something like a week in the NY public library reading whatever criticism was available at the time. it was fun and it helped a lot. One I remember and which you'll probably have trouble finding is "The Reader of the Movies" (I think) by someone named Lippmann and published (I think) in the Denver Quarterly. It's been many years, but I liked it a lot.

My suggestion is based on the assumption that GR must be read at least
twice. I think the 1st time one shouldn't try too hard to make sure
they "get it."
