there's some interesting stuff about American plans for invading
Europe discovered by Zoyd, er, Burton Wheeler, progressive US Senator
from Montana. He had plans to publicize these plans as part of his
opposition to entering WWII but before he could, Pearl Harbor was a
fait accompli
He also talks about how the Roosevelt machine grabbed Wheeler for
President signs out of his supporters' hands (including his kids') at
the 1940 (I think) Democratic convention in Chicago; and how the
machine payrolled guys created a big cheer that sounded spontaneous on
the radio.
Interesting autobio: Yankee from the West.
Wheeler, in turn, figures (monstrously changed) in Philip Roth's book
The Plot Against America. which I would like to read sometime...also,
the Dude talks about Wheeler in connection with Zoyd:

probably speaks more directly to the question
