That's my problem with Eco: endless and pointless conspiracies. His
banal point: humans believe in conspiracies inside of conspiracies, ad
infinitum. History is the fodder for this tendency. If you enjoy
following these bread crumb tales, Eco's your man (I also dislike
R.A.Wilson's Illuminatis books for the same reason - but at least he
was having fun). COL49 did it much better, with more depth and
creativity.
