Yeah, the other free online university stuff is really cool for
personal edification. I audit those courses pretty freely. What is
exceptional about this MIT offering is that it is interactive and you
get credit for completing the course work. It's not a degree, per se,
but a certificate that may be marketable. It is a free online
university with a reputable institution. That makes these courses
desirable for folks who have the intellectual capability to move
through an extended educational program, but who do not have access to
the facilities to do so and add to their employability. This could be
exceptionally good news for third-world folks in any country
(including the good ol' Unemployed States). It also, as the article
notes, puts pressure on other online universities to price their
programs more in keeping with the nature of their offerings.
