Subject: More Golden Fang resonances?
So, I start reading Zinn's People's History of the US and
what am I forcefully reminded of on the opening pages?
"The information Columbus wanted most was: where is the gold?"
"There was gold in Asia, people thought".....
And, of course that is why Spain sent Columbus and C's exaggerated
reports of possible gold got his second expedition of 17 ships and
1200 men financed; the aim was clear, slaves and gold.
I had to stop reading shortly--for awhile-- as Zinn, quoting some chroniclers,
writes
of the start of the extermination of a people, the Arawak Indians, who 'swam out
to greet them",
whom Columbus wrote of as 'naive", "always ready
to share", who lived in village communities, with self-subsistence farming,
without horses
or work animals, who had no iron, therefore no swords--they cut themselves
touching them discoveringly---
but
had small gold earrings...........(later reports to Spain say: "They have no
idea of their worth")
A people full of P's values, powerless and destroyed....
