In the good ol' days, Robt.'d whip up a couple/three immaculately
typed and/or punctuated paragraphs of unctious erudtion to take issue
with, well, pretty much anything I'd post, so ... but "alice"'s
not-so-much-objection-as-caveat is a fair one (even as he gives a god
example of the general form in question here), "this" (or "that," as
subsequently mentioned) more generally points to/at/indicates, well,
whatever's appropriate (given the context) and/or worst (given the
various imaginations involved).  Again, see subsequent (to alice's
post) discussion.
