In Dr John's autobiography, "Under a Hoodoo Moon: The Life of the
Night Tripper," he tells how as a child, Dr. John ran errands for
Fess, including fetching him his herion. This eventually led the
curious lad to partake of the stuff, leading to his own nearly
life-long addiction. He's been clean for years now (a close friend of
mine, John Fohl, is a regular in his band), left with his life, career
(a very hard-working musician), and Hep C.
