NP--On the Waiting List--Cyclops

A real curmudgeon.

I like books and don't want to just pay for the rights to read a text in a digital format. (For a while, IV could be pre-ordered on the Kindle, but P seems to have put a stop to that idea. That it was doing well seems odd to me. Didn't people want the book?) Maybe the Kindle is useful for a reference work that one just scans through to get hints about where to go or scholarly papers and books, which I've been happy to read as Xerox copies, unless I really like them, but the MLA and Chicago haven't set standards for citation, defeating the purpose if I want to use the scholarship. Scholarly books are also not that much cheaper because the publishers don't think people will be anymore likely to buy the books on a Kindle. (I've discussed the issue with some.) The audience for most scholarship is just too small. Amazon, by the way, can take the rights back, deleting the file from your library and refunding your money. (See story about a pirated edition of 1984 from last year or maybe 2009.)I'll be quite sad if the book disappears.
