I don't see any reason to completely rule it out.
By my lights, dim and multicolored and shining through paraffin (ie lava lamp),
if it increases attention to the text, it's good.

If valid, the hypothesis would lead to some further thoughts.
First, she apparently feels the need to interpret for whoever's
listening. What kind of relationship does this mean?
Also, are there further conversational gambits on her part that can be
ascribed to a similar intention?

Finally, she must have the wire off when she gets spanked, later on...
