Of course, in this instance, it's the souls of the camp guards that are 
  in play, as much as those of the inmates. I.e., how to keep them 
"productive."

Good things can be used for evil purposes unfortunately. I know that 
the spirituality and war stamina link was really well hashed out by 
Viktor Frankl in the book Man's Search for Meaning. That was 
specifically about surviving nazi style concentration camps, but I 
think you could apply his theory of logotherapy to anything.
