Adams lost his innocence if not all privilege, took up his part in the
struggle to confront exploitation of the weak and disenfranchised.

Adams supports the silver backers — primarily small businessmen,
laborers, debtors, and farmers — because he is wary of the control of
bankers and other gold capitalists, whom Henry calls gold-bugs.
