My claim is quite specific and rooted in the texts; P names Wilson as
a major influence and I have connected the text to Mondaugan through
Enfantin. Of course, as Wilson notes in his chapter on American
Socialism, the labor, or work theme is never clearly divorced from the
religious. Wilson spends a good deal of time correcting the
mis-readings of dialectic and materialism, pointing out how the
thousands of counter culture movements, including Brook Farm, spread
like religious fever as the mainstream revival raged. This, it seems
to me, is quite particular to the novel V..
