GR translation: as fine extensions as whip and cane

P89.36-37 ... and aren't scalpel and probe as decorative, as fine extensions as whip and cane?
The published translations interpreted "extensions" to mean that the scalpel and probe are extensions (symbols) of whip and cane, which of course they are. But it seems to me the "extensions" here are of something else. Am I reading it right? If so, these are extensions of what?
