I remember the Fuller Brush Man from my Depression era childhood. He
was a familiar figure coming around the neighborhood. Like the Papers
and Rags (pronounced recks) man. the knife sharpening man, the milk and
eggs man. Neighbors too might come around selling something or other.
The Fuller Brush man was not considered a nuisance by most people. He
would leave a small brush, suitable for cleaning potatoes or something
like that, on your porch as a gift. Then later he'd ring the bell and
show you his wares. They were considered of good quality but a little
expensive. I don't think my mother bought much from him, but some
neighbors did. I remember the brooms as looking different and as being
of better quality than the straws ones brought home from the five and
ten cent store.
