bulls, bulls' blood a thematic leitmotif in TR? Meanings?

Any connection to Hemingway's bullfighting subject and themes? I remember the fake hemingway in a bar
scene in TR. 

Who knew? The opening and near-ending scene of FAIL-SAFE (1964) involve a general who awakes sweating
over a matador killing a bull nightmare........

And P.S. Pynchon-like sighting: Two Pentagon Top dogs on the way to a secret meeting in FAIL-SAFE involves
one of them saying: 'In an earlier time, i might have said the balloons go up; now we say the rockets go up"....
