I joined in 1919. I first picked up a Chums of Chance book in a
back-row seat at an IWW rally in 1910.   My skull was fractured in a
scuffle with some Pinkertons and I spent a few years bumming around
trying to form a union of the unemployed, until I was drafted in 1915
and sent to France.  I read the entire Chums series in the trenches,
the illustrated versions.  The AEF took their time about demobilizing
me, and I came back to my home town shellshocked in the midst of the
flu epidemic.  Luckily I lived next door to a homeopath who diluted a
cure for me.  At loose ends, I took up beekeeping - and then I
discovered the Pynchon List...
