The answer is 1966......that is that is when churhcill's nickname for his bouts of depression became
known to all who could read as his personal physician, Lord Moran, published a book Churchill: The
Struggle for Survival in which he wrote of Churchill talking about the periods of his depressions.....

at the time of The Recognitions.?(Not that I think Gaddis is referring to depression, if anything, here)
just curious. public talk about depression not too common.
